ISU Statement Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 Figure Skating Team Event – Russian/ROC appeals
25 Jul 2024
The International Skating Union (ISU) welcomes the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to reject the appeals placed by the Russian/ROC appellants (read CAS Press Release) in relation to the re-ranking of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 Figure Skating Team Event. The CAS decision confirms the ISU announcement of January 30th for the first and second place teams. However, the final confirmation of the re-ranking for the third place team remains pending until the CAS reaches a decision regarding the Canadian appellants.
This follows the CAS verdict released on January 29, 2024 (read CAS Press Release) to sanction the Russian Figure Skater Kamila Valieva with a 4-year suspension for an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV), taking effect as from December 25, 2021.
As a result of Kamila Valieva’s disqualification, the ISU published a revised ranking of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 Figure Skating Team Event results on January 30th. Following the ISU's announcement, four appeals were filed with the CAS by appellants from Russia/ROC and Canada.
The ISU has taken note of today's CAS decision, which brings the case a step closer to being finalized, allowing the skaters to finally receive the medals they deserve. The ISU extends its gratitude to the athletes for their patience and resilience throughout this process. Following this decision, the ISU will coordinate with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with regard to the awarding of the medals.
The ISU remains firmly committed to promoting safe and clean sport, which was further reinforced during the 2024 ISU Congress. Through the implementation of the ISU Vision 2030, the ISU will continue to take concrete actions together with all relevant stakeholders to uphold the integrity of its competitions and protect the athletes’ physical and mental well-being.
